Current PhD Students
Petros Ellinas
Petros started his PhD in 2023 and his research project is centered around the verification of neural networks and quantum computing.
Before joining the PWR section as a PhD student, Petros completed his Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Petros has held several research assistant and intern positions with NTUA, KPMG Cyprus, the University of Cyprus and just returned from a research stay at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Bastien Giraud
Bastien joined us in 2024. His research focuses on trustworthy machine learning and neural network verification for power systems. Bastien is part of the AI-EFFECT project and mainly responsible to develop explainability and verification algorithms of AI models for different applications in the energy domain.
Bastien holds a double Master of Science, called Wind Energy Master in Electric Power Systems. It consists of a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from TU Delft and in Technology - Wind Energy from NTNU. During his studies, Bastien has also been the managing director of legal affairs and privacy affairs of a student organization at TU Delft, and gained practical experience as a pile monitoring assisstant at Geodrive Technology B.V.
Ioannis Karampinis
Ioannis, or how we call him Giannis, joined us in 2024 and focuses on a physics-informed neural network simulator, PINNSim, for Power System Dynamics.
Giannis holds an Integrated Master in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from University of Patras, and a Master of Science in Business Analytics from DTU. He has also held several engineering and intern positions at various organisations including Novo Nordisk, the University of Patras, Capture One and the Hellenig Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO).
Freeman Martin
Freeman joined us in 2025. His PhD project is a collaboration with Prof. Zakir Rather from the Grid Integration Laboratory at IIT Bombay. His work focuses on methods to accelerate security assessment for power systems and investigates machine learning solutions for renewable power systems and dynamic simulations.
Ioannis Papadopoulos
Ioannis joined us in 2025 and works on a collaborative project with Georgios (George) Tsaousoglou from the Section for Dynamical Systems at DTU Compute. Ioannis' research is centered around the development of AI-based dynamic blackout anticipation and prevention methods on a digital twin of future power systems.
Ioannis received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cyprus and subsequently obtained his M.Sc. degree in Energy Science and Technology from ETH Zurich. He held several research assistant positions at Swissgrid, the Swiss Transmission System Operator, and PHAETHON Centre of Excellence in Cyprus.
Bruno Gelfort
Bruno started in 2026 and is a jointly co-supervised with Tilman Weckesser, Henrik Bindner and me. Bruno's work is funded by the Roadnet project, which focuses on resilient operation of active distribution network dominated power systems.
Bruno holds a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering from EPFL and a Master on Energy Science and Technology from ETH Zürich. He already joined DTU for his Master Thesis on the integration of neural networks into dynamic power system simulators. Bruno has further been an Intern at Swissgrid and focused on optimisation and voltage control studies of the Swiss transmission system.
